The Toronto Sleep Fellowship program is designed for dentists just getting started in dental sleep medicine, as well as experienced dental practitioners who are looking to increase their knowledge of sleep medicine through more hands on clinical experience.

The program exposes participants to all aspects of the diagnosis and clinical examination and the principles of oral appliance therapy, including design, selection, fitting, adjustment and familiarity with the identification and management of potential side effects. During this process, participants will get experience in reading and interpreting diagnostic sleep studies, understanding the use and limitations of home sleep tests and the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the potential limitations and complications of dental devices.

Dentists will be provided a patient and will gain hands on experience with direct participation in patient assessment and treatment.

The Toronto Sleep Fellowship utilizes a team approach through close collaboration with a sleep physician, oral surgeon, dentist, sleep lab technologist, and Shaw Lab Group.

Our goal is for every participant to be trained to immediately begin treating sleep disordered breathing in their practice.

At completion of the program you will be able to:

  • understand sleep physiology and the life threatening consequences of sleep disordered breathing

  • screen patients and examine for sleep disorders

  • educate your patients and help them identify the important issues of sleep disordered breathing

  • deploy and evaluate a Home Sleep Test

  • understand treatment options with an emphasis on application of oral appliance therapy

  • understand, identify and manage craniofacial pain problems and TMD as they may arise during the management of sleep disorders

  • build and maintain a dental sleep medicine practice

  • communicate effectively with physicians
